"I would say that the use of the Internet has become more widespread and is now the main facilitator of the organized crime", Wainwright said in an interview, on the occasion of the publication of the OCTA 2011 Europol report (full report in PDF).
More and more criminal groups are using the Internet to commit crimes and offences are considered as "more traditional", said Wainwright.
"Together with computer crimes such as theft of Bank data or credit cards, the exchange of paedophile material and unauthorized intrusions, Internet is now used to promote the production, collection and distribution of drugs, as well as for the procurement and marketing of human beings"says the report.
The 37-page document also included in the list of crimes powered by network illegal immigration, counterfeiting and trafficking in endangered animal species.
The Internet is also "widely used as a means for establishing secure communications, as well as money-laundering", according to the same report, which stressed that only the bank card fraud had in 2009 about benedficios for criminal groups of more than 1.5 billion dollars.
